Although limited amounts of the oil itself is generally safe to use, we don't use castor oils in our products. Here's why...
In addition to the health concerns about ricin (the toxic by-product of the castor bean), the plant's surface also contains allergenic compounds that can cause permanent nerve damage to those who grow, harvest and process these plants.
This makes castor oil a human health risk. Workers suffer from harmful side effects in places like India, China and Brazil, where the crop is predominantly produced.
Bambu Earth is committed not just to the safety of our customers, but also to the producers of every ingredient we source.
We only source ingredients from producers whose practices we can verify are safe, sustainable and ethical.
Because of the high demand of castor oil, suppliers can be limited and unreliable, and we won't produce a product at the expense of the hands who harvest it's ingredients.

There's no doubt castor oil is very effective at cleansing using the oil cleansing method. But it is also drying. Very drying. Many people find the ingredient too harsh for oil cleansing.
So, what's the solution? While there isn't a direct replacement for castor, there is a way to get around using it and still experience successful results while oil cleansing.
Sebum usually lubricates the skin without clogging the pores. When our bodies lack linoleic acid our skin's sebum becomes sticky and hardens in the pores. The hardened sebum then appears in the form of a whitehead, blackhead or cyst.
The good news is, our cleansing oils are formulated with a blend of oils that are high in linoleic acid which helps regulate sebum as well as cleanse the skin properly without drying it.
The downside? Castor oil helps bring the oil from your pores to the surface. So when using our cleansing oils, just remember to carefully remove all of the dirt and makeup from your skin with a soft, clean facial cloth.
