Bakuchiol
A plant-derived retinol alternative that helps soften the appearance of wrinkles, refine skin texture, and promote more even-looking tone.
What does the research show?
In a randomized, double-blind study of 44 participants, researchers compared 0.5% bakuchiol cream applied twice daily with 0.5% retinol cream applied once daily over 12 weeks. Both groups showed improvements in wrinkles and hyperpigmentation. Retinol users reported more scaling and stinging.
This study supports bakuchiol’s role in smoother, more even-looking skin. It does not establish that every bakuchiol formula performs identically or that higher concentrations produce proportionally greater results.

Why does the form of vitamin C matter?
Vitamin C comes in several forms, each with different stability, delivery, and research characteristics. Our Vitamin C Serum combines four derivatives: ascorbyl glucoside, ethyl ascorbic acid, magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, and sodium ascorbyl phosphate.
Human research on magnesium ascorbyl phosphate has reported improvements in uneven pigmentation. One study evaluated a 10% cream over three months. These findings inform our ingredient selection, while results depend on the specific derivative, concentration, and finished formulation.

Squalane
A lightweight, skin-compatible emollient that helps maintain moisture and leaves skin feeling soft, smooth, and comfortable.
How does squalane support moisturized skin?
Squalane is a stable emollient related to squalene, a lipid naturally present in skin’s surface oils. Its primary cosmetic role is conditioning dry skin and improving softness and suppleness.
An older human study reported improved dryness and higher surface hydration following squalane use. This supports its moisturizing role, although the evidence is more limited than the clinical literature for established humectants such as glycerin.

Snow Mushroom
Moisture-binding polysaccharides help hydrate skin, soften dry texture, and leave the complexion looking supple and plump.
What supports its hydration benefits?
Snow mushroom contains polysaccharides valued for their water-binding properties. A small, six-week human study compared a skincare routine containing 0.5% snow mushroom extract with a routine without the extract. The group using the extract showed increased skin moisture and reduced roughness.
The study did not demonstrate statistically significant improvements in wrinkles or pigmentation. It supports hydration and texture benefits, with further research needed to establish how different extracts and isolated polysaccharides compare.

Glycerin
A proven moisture-binding ingredient that draws water into skin’s outer layers, helping dry skin feel softer and look more supple.
Why is glycerin a hydration essential?
Glycerin is a humectant: it attracts and retains water in the outermost layer of skin. In a randomized, double-blind crossover study involving 51 volunteers with dry skin, researchers compared a complete moisturizer with versions containing different components.
The glycerin component improved skin hydration, while the petrolatum component primarily reduced moisture loss. These findings illustrate why formulas combine water-binding ingredients with emollients to address dryness in complementary ways.

Paracress
A flowering botanical studied in skincare formulas for helping soften the appearance of expression lines and improve surface smoothness.
What has been studied?
Paracress, also known as Acmella oleracea or Spilanthes acmella, has been investigated in topical facial serums.
A randomized, controlled half-face study evaluated an Acmella-containing serum over two weeks. Researchers reported improvements in hydration, smoothness, and measured wrinkle characteristics around the eyes and mouth.
These findings concern a specific serum and extract preparation. They support further exploration of cosmetic smoothing benefits; they do not establish equivalence to injectable wrinkle treatments.

Hexapeptide-11
A bioactive peptide selected to support a smoother, firmer-looking complexion and skin’s supple feel.
What supports the firmness story?
A published study included a four-week, controlled half-face evaluation involving 25 volunteers. A toner containing a hexapeptide-11 preparation improved one measured parameter of skin’s initial elastic response compared with the control toner. Another deformation measure did not improve significantly.
This is promising preliminary evidence for elasticity-related benefits. The study used a different formulation and ingredient preparation from our moisturizer, so its results should not be interpreted as a measured outcome for our product.

Blue Algae
Spirulina extract helps complement a hydrating formula for skin that feels moisturized and looks smoother.
What does human research suggest?
A 28-day study involving 40 women evaluated a gel cream containing 0.1% spirulina extract against its base formulation. Researchers reported improvements in skin hydration, moisture retention, and surface roughness, with some findings differing between younger and mature participants.
This small study provides preliminary support for spirulina’s moisturizing and texture-related benefits. Its findings should not be presented as proof that blue algae alone lifts or tightens skin.

What supports its antioxidant role?
Coenzyme Q10, also listed as ubiquinone, is naturally present in the body. Published research on topical Q10-containing formulas found increased Q10 levels in skin and demonstrated antioxidant effects, including reduced free radicals in stressed skin.
This research supports Q10’s antioxidant role. It does not, on its own, establish a particular degree of visible wrinkle reduction or firmness from every formula containing the ingredient.

Papaya Extract

How does enzyme exfoliation work?
Papain, an enzyme obtained from papaya, can break down proteins involved in surface skin-cell adhesion. Its exfoliating activity depends on concentration, pH, processing, and stability in the finished formula.
Research testing commercial enzyme peels has found substantial differences in actual enzyme activity. Papaya extract’s presence alone therefore does not establish exfoliating potency; confirming active enzyme levels is an important part of substantiating stronger enzyme claims.

How do these ingredients refine texture?
Bamboo stem powder and tagua seed powder provide physical exfoliation as the mask is massaged over skin. Their polishing action helps remove loose surface flakes and refine the feel of rough texture.
Here, the supporting rationale is their mechanical function in the formula. The degree of exfoliation and tolerability depends on particle characteristics, the formula, and application pressure. We should reserve quantified or clinically proven results for testing of the finished mask.
